Manuel Castiñeiras is currently Full Professor in History of Medieval Art in the Department of Art and Musicology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since June 2018, after receiving his “habilitation” to the rank of Full Professor (Catedrático) both from the AQU (2013) and from the ANECA (2015). He has also been Head of the same Department (2014-2017) and Associate Professor (Agregat) of Medieval Art (2010-2018). Previously he was Chief Curator of the Romanesque Collection at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) (2005-2010) and Associate Professor (Profesor Titular) in the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) (1997-2005). In 2012 he enjoyed a short stage in Japan as fellow of the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) and in the USA as Guest Professor at the University of Pennsylvania (Dept. History of Art). Furthermore, during 2017-2018, he was on sabbatical leave as Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellow in the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. to develop the project: Shifting Identities and Travelling Objects: Artistic encounters with Byzantium during the Expansion of the Crown of Aragon.
Although his research has been mainly focused on Romanesque art and medieval panel painting, since 2014 he is widely working in the fields of Byzantine and Crusader Art to analyze some issues related to the artistic exchange in the Medieval Mediterranean and the making of cross-cultural identities. As result of his stay as Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellow at CASVA (2017-2018) he is currently preparing the book: Latin Perceptions of the Byzantine East. Art and Identities in Flux during the Catalan Expansion across the Late Medieval Mediterranean. He published several books, such as El calendario medieval hispano, 1996; The Creation Tapestry, 2011; Entre la letra y el pincel: el artista medieval, ed. 2017; Romanesque Patrons and Processes (ed. with J. McNeill, R. Plant and J. Camps, 2018). He is also author of numerous articles and reviews published in prestigious Journals such as The British Archeological Association, Speculum, Cahiers de Civilisation Médiévale, Arte Medievale, Archivo Español de Arte, Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. As topic editor of the Open-Access journal Arts, he has recently edited the Special Issue: Encounters in Medieval Wall Painting between the West and Byzantium: Appropriation, Exchange, and Mutual Perceptions (2020). He has curated two major exhibitions: El Románico y el Mediterráneo. Cataluña, Toulouse y Pisa (1120-1180) (MNAC, 2008) and Compostela and Europe. The story of Diego Gelmírez (2010). In the last decade he has directed two important research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology: Artistas, Patronos y Público. Cataluña y el Mediterráneo (siglos XI-XV)-MAGISTRI CATALONIAE (MICINN- HAR2011-23015) (2012-2014) and Movilidad y transferencia artística en el Mediterráneo Medieval (1187-1388). Artistas, objetos y modelos-MAGISTRI MEDITERRANEI (HAR2015-63883-P) (2015-2020). He is as well IP (Main Researcher) of the Grup de Recerca Consolidat (SGR-2017-231) of the Generalitat de Catalunya: MAGISTRI CATALONIAE-Estudis culturals de la Mediterrània Medieval (s. XI-XV).
